two are fir (too hard) and two are New Zealand pine (soft)

 
This technique began long ago in Europe and was adopted in the 1930s by some artists in Provincetown, RI.
It is now making a modest comeback through the Women Painters of Washington organization.

This little painting is a retirement gift for a dear friend and a
former gallery partner of mine with 30 years working at Seattle's Pike Place Market. I only worked there for 16 years and it was hard to quit but the commute got to be too much after I moved north. She worked long hours well into her eighties.
