Recovering from foot surgery I have been painting in the back garden to entertain myself. I moved my chair around and just drew everything around me and then painted in the colors. They will be cut apart and punched and ribboned to sell as bookmarks at the Gallery. Unless I decide to use them as simply small paintings to sell. Maybe both.

These paintings are not actually as dark as the photos. I am still practicing my photography skills which are lacking. These are for my sister who recently had to put down her sweet labrador, Willow. An especially kind dog who will be greatly missed.

Done entirely with two palette knives. No brushes makes the texture rough.

I think this is finished. It will hang on the wall for a while to decide if changes are needed. With this kind of painting, I am never happy enough to leave it alone until I just get sick of it. Fun to paint and then it becomes too much and I go and start another one. The learning process...

Two different rice papers, one a brighter white, are laminated in order to give the painting more strength. The backing paper is MASA; the others are handmade Korean and Chinese papers - difficult to paint on and very absorbent. No ink was used here, only Japanese watercolors which use a glue binder, not the gum arabic of western watercolors such as Winsor Newton. The glue is made from cornstarch and aloe cooked over low heat. These three paintings are still wet. As they dry they will lighten somewhat.

These paintings show two different styles of sumi painting: the outline method and the regular, brush stroke shapes, bone and boneless. Both are common in sumi painting. The paper is the same, only the lighting is more incandescent on the middle one. I am no photographer, for sure. These are done particularly for a customer in San Franciso to choose from. They are putting together a series of my smaller paintings for the hallway in their condo. Framed as 8x10 they will go well together, a crab (or two), a hummingbird, horses, and maybe even a tiger for 2010 is the Year of the Tiger and I am a tiger person.

Trying out new photography tricks for different lighting effects, trying to get trueness...

Got some weird effects while experimenting with the enzo motif: Eternity, Today & Tomorrow, and Forever, though not in that order. Enzo is a great warm-up and mind-clearing subject.

Hoping to get back to painting eventually. I taught a sumi class to seniors today which was fun and rewarding. Their work was bold and imaginative. Teaching seniors is the best for me because I enjoy the honesty of their work as well as their humor which is often lacking in the younger set who seem to be a bit ego-ridden...fragile egos worry too much. The seniors are seasoned and thoroughly in the present moment, focused and interested in the process of making art. I will take their small paintings and mount them onto cards for them to send, or keep, as they choose. I hope to continue teaching at the facility where I was today. Nice people and excellent classroom with optimum lighting. Soon I will post their work after I get the photo software installed on this new computer (or hubby does it for me). Glad summer is over...

Whether it's for framing a painting or grooming at cat, mats are a real pain in the neck. I quit. The cat is going to the groomer for a major belly shave on Friday.
